Second annual report upon the natural history and geology of the State of Maine, 1862. The report was 430 p. plus index. Ezekiel Holmes and C.H.
Hitchcock were the lead workers, but there were several teams and contractors involved. The men said the state was getting lots of good publicity for
funding the effort. The season's focus was on the north country; what sorts of minerals were there that could make money? In a 207 p. report, they
noted substantial iron ore deposits in Aroostook County, but the ore was far removed from any transportation. There was also gold, but it was in small
scattered amounts and needed lots of processing. There was a 97 p. essay on fish, a 76 p. report on insects, and smaller reports on other fauna. The
men recognized all the help they received from the public, including assistance from Canadian scientists, railroad passes and free use of boats.
