Canals offered its report: The primary opposition to the extension of the Hampshire and Hampden Canal said it would be much more useful and much less
expensive to improve navigation on the Connecticut River rather than build a canal and the canal would impinge on the businesses that had built up along
the river. The Canal Company said a canal would provide a straighter and therefore less expensive trip to market. George Beach, who had asked
permission to improve river navigation, principally with dams and pools, said his method would be much less expensive than a canal. The Committee was mostly
in favor of the canal, but thought that river improvements should still be considered, so they asked for bills for each method. (Digitized from a
