Senate. Act on Boston fire protection, 1827
|

SEE ALSO 51829 Senate No. 28 An Act for the protection of the City of Boston against fire, 1827. This is essentially a building code. There was a
list of buildings to house large gatherings or commercial buildings that would generate heat. The buildings had to be brick or stone with walls at least
12" thick and there were other directions for larger buildings. Only slate or metal was acceptable for roofs. Small wooden buildings or sheds had to
separated from other buildings by a brick wall. Two story wooden buildings could only be for dwellings and close buildings had to have a brick wall
between them. There followed a list of building rules--height, setback, materials, etc. Many penalties were set out. The many fines would benefit
