Secretary of State. List of acts, records, documents and books in the Office, 1827
Senate No. 5 The Secretary of State reported on January 4, 1827. He had been asked to provide a list of the acts, records, documents, and books in
his office, which turned into a considerable project. He had grouped like with like, found some lost things and determined some things were truly
lost. Careful review showed the list of acts in the 1822 Revised Statutes was correct. Acts prior to 1780 were unrolled, their date and title carefully
noted on an outside edge, and put in chronological order. Some New Yok laws were found that were probably left when the New York and Massachusetts were
controlled by one governor. Quite a few records from 1737-1745 were destroyed in a fire. The building that housed the records was not built for the
purpose, so the records were scattered in various rooms and alcoves; the new list had locations. So many people had access to the records that it was
difficult to maintain order and integrity of the collection. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State
Library).
