General Court. Act to incorporate the Quinabaug Canal Company, 1826
|
|
A act to incorporate the Quinabaug Canal Company, 1826. Twenty-six men were listed as those who would incorporate the company, it having the usual rights and duties of a corporation. The corporation had authority to locate, construct and fully complete a canal from the town of Western up the Quabog River to Podunk Pond to the Quinabaug River and down its valley to the Massachusetts/Connecticut line. They had authority to use several named ponds to maintain the correct water level in the canal. If impediments cropped up in the route, the corporation could alter the route to solve the problem. The corporation could own real estate to a value of $300,000. Tolls (6c/mile) taken on the canal would benefit the corporation forever. Penalties were provided for vandalism. The local courts were to provide lists of people to appraise property for compensation. The usual rules for compensation applied. The corporation was authorized to sell shares for $100 each, following the usual rules for share management. If the canal were not completed in ten years, the franchise could be reauthorized.
