General Court. Act amending and act to regulate the militia, 1826

SEE ALSO 51661, 51722 Addition to an act ... to regulate the militia, 1826. When a unit was short an officer, it was up to the commander of the unit
to look at an existing militia roll or to require the Town to provide a list of those eligible to serve. The group was ordered to appear to elect
officers, attend training or parades. The men were to be paid an unspecified amount or fined an unspecified amount if they did not appear. Each
militiaman was to keep himself armed, equipped, and uniformed, ready to appear. When requested in writing by the commander, the Town was to supply one
quarter pound good powder made into cartridges for each person on the roll. Judge Advocates were to keep good records of all proceedings. The commander
could order a member to serve as clerk if there were no volunteers. If an elected officer had been convicted of a crime, he could not serve. There were
