General Court. Act defining the responsibilities of assessors, 1825
An Act by the General Court in 1825 said assessors could add state and county taxes to more local taxes, but they must show the proportion of state
and county taxes in the total tax bill for any given property. The assessor was not liable for the assessments, but was only responsible for his own
integrity. This Act repealed an earlier one on the topic passed on February 21, 1824. This Act may mean that assessors were no longer collectors of
taxes, so they were not responsible for obtaining those monies, but were to provide honest appraisals. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title
originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
