General Court. Act amending the Act on taking depositions, 1824
|
|
SEE ALSO 51711 In 1824, the General Court amended the Act for taking depositions to give witnesses, deponents or potential jurors the option of affirming, as did the Quakers, their promise to tell the truth rather than swearing an oath. If the judge was not convinced of the person's sincerity, the oath could still be required. If someone were convicted of trying to use affirmation falsely, the person would face the same penalties as applied for perjury.
