General Court. Act for better regulation of jails and prisoners, 1824
|

In 1824, The General Court presented an Act to better regulate Jails and prisoners. The Jail Keeper was obligated to provide heat for the inmates,
keeping track of the expense so he could be reimbursed by the local authority. If the jailor refused to provide prisoners items or food required by
the local authority, the jailer could be fined. Liquor was never to enter the jail; anyone who tried would be fined. If a prisoner was unruly and
broke things, s/he was liable to solitary confinement on bread and water for up to ten days. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by
