1835, Documents relating to Marshpee District
SEE ALSO 52538, 52541, 52588, 52598, 52604 Senate No. 8 After a revolt by the Marshpee, a new form of government was put in place with a single
Commissioner from outside and all other governing positions held by the Marshpee. Documents relating to the Marshpee District, December 1834. The
Commissioner of the District of Marshpee had made a settlement with the former overseers of the plantation, which is in the last pages of the report. The
Treasurer's report showed bills for the Commissioner's services, mostly for surveying, and there were payments for wood and taxes soon to come. There
had been a meeting to create a voters list and then a formal meeting to choose selectmen and a clerk of the district. Regulations for fishing and
woodland use were put in place and marshland was allotted. The Commissioner spent most of his time trying to ascertain correct property lines so there
could be a permanent record of those. School teachers were in place and alcohol sales were nearly under control. Relations with the neighbors were
very good. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
