Description and Holding Information
Boston, 1773, Votes & proceedings of the Freeholders
Following on from the meetings of the previous year (See LLMC 23434), these were held November 5 and November 11, 1773. John Hancock was again
moderator. There was a rumor that a large shipment of tea was headed to Boston on behalf of the East India Company. In addition to being angry about the
tax, the colonists feared a tea monopoly would exclude them. Taxation without representation was part of the discussion. The tea tax would benefit
the Crown only and it was the duty of every American to oppose it. The Committee would visit the local East India agents and encourage them to resign.
The agents claimed to be unsure about the tea duty and declined to resign until they knew for certain. At the meeting on November 18th, the group
tried again to pressure the agents to resign, but the agents held firm. The resolutions from 1773 included one stating that it was the "duty of every
American" to oppose the duties on the shipment of East-India Company tea (pages 5-6). The Early State Records collection also contains the records a
much later meeting from 1782 (See LLMC 42343 (Microfilmed from the original print held by the Massachusetts Historical Society Library)
