[Maine.] Twentieth Legislature. No. 12. Senate. An act further regulating divorces, 1840. Libels for divorce had to filed in the Supreme Judicial Court. Either party could present evidence; if the divorce was not granted, the libellant had to pay costs. Certain sections of earlier acts were repealed. Divorce could be granted for desertion, joining the Shakers, or being imprisoned. The bill was read a second time January 31, 1840.
