Header: Case. [There are frequent margin notes and some difficulty reading the text.] On November 5, 1768, the Proprietor purchased land from Kittanning to the western boundary of Penn's grant and south. The government opened a land office and began a court system, etc., all with no opposition from Virginia. In 1774, Lord Dunmore sent a commandant to take over Fort Pitt and to exercise Virginia's control over the entire area, including the courts and other government functions. Penn sent Lord Dunmore the survey documents of the original grant and changes since, but Dunmore was not impressed. Penn declined to leave the area and referred the problem to the Crown. In February 1775, Dunmore sent troops to Westmoreland County who opened the jail, freed all the prisoners, and took all the Pennsylvania magistrates away to Pittsburgh. The Proprietor made another attempt to communicate with Lord Dunmore, but he was ignored. (Digitized from a microfilm copy held at the Pennsylvania State Historical Society)
