1829?, Auxiliary Society of Powhatan for Colonizing Africa. Report
|
|
1829? Memorial of the Auxiliary Society of Powhatan for Colonizing Africa, with the free people of color of the United States, and submitted to the Virginia General Assembly. The petition presented reasons for the support of the society. Of note, the memorialists suggested that their society would help to resolve any evasion of an 1805 Virginia law in which emancipated slaves lost their freedom if they remained in the state over twelve months. The society would provide a "safe and hospitable Asylum" to both free born and freed persons of color. See LLMC #22821 for a related document.
