1851, New Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia
New Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia, adopted by the State Convention on July 31, 1851. The constitution made changes to certain taxes,
provided that certain judges and the Lieutenant Governor be elected, as well as making some changes in the electorate. Of note, in section 19, the
constitution stated that freed slaves would forfeit their freedom if they remained in Virginia for more than twelve months; moreover the General
Assembly could legislate restrictions on slave owners' ability to emancipate their slaves. See LLMC #22171 for a related documents. (Digitized from a
