1860, Commission from Alabama
1860 Letter of transmittal from Governor John Ellis to the General Assembly presenting a report from the Commission from Alabama regarding the
relationship of the state with the federal government. The document was prepared by Robert H. Smith and I.W. Garrott on behalf of Alabama as a response to
the recent election of Abraham Lincoln of the Republican Party and the subsequent need to protect the rights of both Alabama and North Carolina. The
authors also indicated that that the Alabama convention, called after this election, would result in secession, as its citizen should not be reduced
to the "degradation" of equality with slaves. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of titles originally held by the University of North Carolina Library
at Chapel Hill).
