Joint Select Comm. on the Albemarle & Chesapeake Canal. Report, 1859?
1859? Report from the Joint Select Committee on the Albemarle & and Chesapeake Canal. The committee physically inspected the 8 foot wide canal under
construction, as well as the financial documents at the office headquarters. Of note, the committee indicated that this canal, which was filled with
many obstructions, was the first to be constructed through the use of steam excavators or dredging machines, as well as submarine blasts of powder to
remove the remaining logs. This canal would provide to a channel to the ocean, independent of Virginia. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of titles
originally held by the University of North Carolina Library at Chapel Hill).
