Joint Select Comm. on Amending the Constitution, Report, 1833
1833 Report of the Joint Select Committee on the amending of the state constitution, both as to the propriety of so doing and the most expedient
method to accomplish this result. The committee focused on the need to change the then current basis of representation; specifically that the governor
should be elected by the citizens, not the General Assembly. In addition, the committee determined that voting should be limited only to white men, as
the "right of suffrage is in no sense a blessing to the negroes and mulattoes." (Digitized from a microfilm copy of titles originally held by the
University of North Carolina Library at Chapel Hill).
