House. Speech in the House of Burgesses in favor of high duty on Negroes, 1759 (MS)
1759 Speech in the House of Burgesses in favor of a high duty on Negroes, in order to prevent further importation of slaves. Of note, there is some
fading in a few spots of the document. Cf. Journal of the Virginia House of Burgesses, Nov. 8, 1759 (p. 12) where one reads "Ordered, That Leave be
given to bring in a Bill, To oblige the Importers of, Negroes for their own Use to pay a Duty ..." This order may be in response to this petition.
