February 27, 1787 Proclamation of Governor Thomas Chittenden ordering that the citizens of the state not harbor or otherwise help various named
rebels, and to assist in the apprehension of these men and return to Massachusetts and the military officers authorized to receive them. (Digitized from a
microfilm copy of titles originally held by the Library of Congress).
Title:   By His Excellency Thomas Chittenden, Esq. ... a proclamation : Whereas the General Court of the commonwealth of Massachusetts, by their act of the fourth of February instant, declared that a horrid and wicked rebellion did exist in said commonwealth, and that Daniel Shays [and 3 others] ... were the principal aidents and abettors of said rebellion ... All the citizens of this state are absolutely and most solemnly forbidden to take arms in support of or to engage in the service, on said rebellion, by furnishing them with arms, ammunition or otherwise ... GIven under my hand in Council, Bennington, this 27th day of February AD 1787.
