1850-01-11, Governor's statements in regard to re-capture of fugitive slaves
January 11, 1850 Governor Thomas' statements regarding two cases which involved the re-capture of fugitive slaves, one in New York and the other in
Pennsylvania. Of note, in the latter case, a Maryland citizen was arrested for kidnapping a Negro, who was a fugitive slave. In both instances the
governor supported the right to recapture slaves that had escaped to the Northern states. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of titles originally held by
