Description and Holding Information
1755-08-19, Gov. Morris to Gen. Shirley stating proceedings of the Assembly (MS)
SEE ALSO: 56926 Wrapper: Copy August 19 1755 Governor Morris's letter to General Shirley entered 19th August 1755. Note: The above endorsement
was on the original copy. Writing from Philadelphia, Morris said he had received the orders to put together a force for another expedition, but he had
no hope of getting any cooperation from his Assembly. The Assembly actively lobbied the public not to take up arms. Unless Morris agreed to heavy
taxes on the Proprietor, there would be no militia and no provisions. Morris planned to advise Dunbar to come far enough east to re-supply his men and
then go to New York. If Shirley were able to interdict all the French supplies, Fort Duquesne would wither and die. (Digitized from material held
at the American Philosophical Society)
