James V. Wofford of Company M of the 24th Infantry, who was charged and tried jointly with 39 others of Willful disobedience of an order, mutiny, murder
of 14 persons, and assault with intent to kill 8 persons. The charges were in connection with the race riots in Houston, Texas on August 23, 1917. He
was found guilty of disobedience of orders and mutiny and not guilty of of murder and assault, and sentenced to hard labor for fifteen years. The
reviewing authority disapproved of the conviction of mutiny, but approved all the other findings. His sentence of confinement was reduced to two years.)
