24th U.S. Infantry, who was charged and tried jointly with thirty-nine others for willful disobedience of an order, joining in a mutiny, murder, and
assault with intent to kill for his role in the race riots in Houston, Texas on August 23, 1917. Originally given life in prison, his sentence was
reduced to 20 years. He was recommended for parole in 1924 and his sentence was remitted in 1938.)
