p., United States, War Department, Office of the Judge Advocate General, 1936. ( The clemency review file of Walter T. Johnson, formerly a Private in
the 24th Infantry who was convicted of disobedience of an order to remain in camp, mutiny, murder, and assault with intent to commit murder in
connection with his participation in the race riots in Houston, Texas on August 23, 1917. He was sentenced to be dishonorably discharged, with total
forfeitures, and confined to hard labor in the penitentiary for life. Clemency was denied on August 22, 1931, however on December 30, 1935 the remainder of
his sentence was remitted.)
