Description and Holding Information
1808-1890, Straits Settlement Law Reports
Cases heard and determined in Her Majesty’’s Supreme Court of the Straits Settlements, 1808–1884, edited and reported, with a judicial-historical
preface from 1786–1885 by James W. Norton Kyshe, acting registrar of the said court in Malacca, in 3 vols.: Singapore, pr. at the Singapore & Straits Pr.
Off., 1885–86. The original set of three volumes was followed by a “Vol. 4,” which takes coverage to 1890 by the same author and publisher, 1890.
Vol. 4 also up-dates the preface to 1890 and provides rules and orders of the court in force in 1890. (The original set of Vol. 1–3 is organized as
follows: V. 1, civil cases; V. 2, criminal, admiralty, bankruptcy, ecclesiastical & habeas corpus cases in separately paginated sections; and V.3,
magistrates’’ appeals. Vol. 4 covers all areas intermingled chronologically. Because the pagination is continuous in Vols. 1, 3 & 4, they should be cited
respectively as 1 Ky, 3 Ky & 4 Ky. Because Vol. 2 has separate pagination for each section {criminal, admiralty, bankruptcy, ecclesiastical & habeas
corpus} the sections should be cited respectively 2 Ky Cr., 2 Ky Ad., 2 Ky Bankr., 2 Ky Eccl., or 2 Ky Hab. Corp. as the case may require. The 120-page
preface in Vol. 1 provides an enormously thorough and scholarly overview of a century of judicial history in the Colony.)
