“The Extension of British Influence and Trade in Africa” by Captain Lugard: paper extracted from Proceedings of the Royal Colonial Institute, Vol. 27, 1895/96, pp. 1–40. (Lacks TOC & index. At the time of this lecture, Captain Frederick John Dealtry Lugard, a graduate of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, already had a distinguished military career behind him. Zelig-like, he seems to have been almost everywhere in the Empire of his time; serving in the Afghan War, 1879-80, the Sudan campaign, 1884-85, the Third Burmese War, 1886-87, and in a campaign in Nyassaland against Arab slave traders, 1888. His severe wounds in the latter campaign ended his military career. Upon leaving the army, Lugard joined the service of the British East Africa Company, and served during 1889-92 as Military Administrator of Uganda. He then worked for the Royal Niger Company and was instrumental in solidifying its foothold in Nigeria. Just after giving this lecture he joined the service of the British West Charterland Company, and in 1896-97 headed up a company expedition to Lake Nagami, in what would become British Bechuanaland. After that he was recruited into the Colonial Service and sent to Lagos to help organize resistance to French incursions in that area. In this role he organized the West African Frontier Force, which he commanded until the tensions with France abated in late 1899. Thereafter Lugard rose steadily in the Service: High Commissioner of the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria, 1990-96; Governor of Hong Kong, 1907-1912; Governor General of the Colony of Nigeria, 1912-1919; and British representative on the League of Nations Permanent Mandates Commission, 1922-36. Lugard was knighted in 1901, appointed to the Privy Council in 1920, and elevated to the peerage as Baron Lugard in 1928.)
