(The United States of Brazil began life with the promulgation of its constitution, modeled in many points on that of the U,S., on 24 February 1891. However, under the constitution, the civil law of the Portuguese administration continued in force. That law was based upon the Ordenações Philippinas of King Philip I of Portugal (Philip II of Spain), known in Brazil as the Codigo Philippino, promulgated three centuries previously in 1595. The road toward development of a uniquely Brazilian civil code was tortuous, involving four separate efforts extending over 60 years. That protracted process, which culminated in the present document, is described by Wheless in his foreward at pp.xii-xvi.)
