Report of the Trinidad and Tobago Independence Conference, 1962:13p, Cmnd. 1757, London, HMSO, 1962. (At head of title: Colonial Office. When the short-lived Federation of the West Indies came to an end in 1958, the general consensus among the elective parties in the United Colony of Trinidad and Tobago, which was already internally self-governing, was that they should go for eventual independence. After the conference described in the present document, independence came on 31 August 1962. The government at the time of independence was based on the parliamentary model, with an appointive Senate and a House of Representatives elected under universal adult suffrage. In 1976 the islands became the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, with a president elected by the combined membership of the Senate and House of Representative.)
