Natal Law Reports (New Series): var. reporters, Vol. 1-30, 1879-1909, Pietermaritzburg, pr. for the Natal Law Society, 1881, all published. (While the term “New Series” is applied to the first several volumes of this series, this is not a “New Series” in the common sense of one regular series of reports succeeding another well-established predecessor series. Instead the “predecessors” to this “New Series” were a composite of nominative reporters and digests which ended their coverage in 1872. Hence the separate title on this site: “1873-79, Supreme Ct. Rpts., The “Gap Series”, Sel. Cas.”, which attempted to provide some coverage for the years 1873-79. It therefore appears that “New Series” is used here to convey the idea of “First Regular Series.” With South African union in 1910, the colonial Natal Supreme Court ceased to exist and its functions were transferred to the Union of South Africa Supreme Court’s Natal Division. For the reports of that court see elsewhere on this site. Special note: the last few cases of the Natal Colony’s Supreme Court, Jan.-May, 1910, are reported in the 1910 volume of that successor series.)
