April 1842, ordered to be printed by the House of Commons, 12 August 1842. (In 1833 a legal or fourth member was added to the Governor-General‘s
Council, with the stipulation that he not be a servant of the East India Company. At the same time a commission was appointed to revise and codify the law
under the direction of the “Legal Member.” Thomas Babington Macaulay {1800-59; from1857 Lord Macaulay of Rothley} was the first Legal Member of the
Council and also served during 1834–38 as first President of the Indian Law Commission. The main work of the Commission in the early years covered by
these reprinted reports was the creation of an India-specific Penal Code, the original draft of which was by Macaulay.)
