Dear valued LLMC Members:
This content update provides updated information for March 2024. During March, LLMC continued to work on adding content from many of our content donors, that continually enhance the global collections represented in LLMC Digital. I’m happy to report that in our long-term Early State Records (ESR) initiative which contains 1808 microfilm reels, only 5 reels remain to be processed! We aim to finish these reels, mostly pertaining to Pennsylvania, in April. Metadata creation for Phases 1 and 2 of this project will continue over the next year. The ESR titles processed and added in March are mostly representative of the state of Maine. Every day interesting documents surface as the ESR project continues. In March the catalogers happened across the copy of a letter from George Washington to Lieut. Gov. Morris of Pennsylvania (LLMC 56722). Although undated, one can determine from the context that the letter was written in 1756, at the start of the French and Indian War. While relating recent events in the fighting, Washington observes that “Nothing I more sincerely wish than a Union to the Colonys in this time of eminent Danger.” This statement, one will note, is fully 20 years prior to 1776! Sentiment was already stirring. We recently received a large donation of Foreign Official Gazettes (FOGS). These titles are from countries on almost every continent. The first title to be added to LLMC Digital is the Gambia Gazette, covering 1969-1974. We plan to add holdings for 3-5 countries per month, in addition to adding more years for each country, as they are donated to us. For most of the countries in the world, the official gazette of that jurisdiction is one of the first publications consulted when doing legal research. If your library has any FOGS that you would like to donate, please contact us. Also new this month are a handful of titles covering pre-1948 Korea. These titles are in the processing stage, and should be available online next month, under the country listing of “Korea, Pre-1948.” Also, in March we added the Amharic language to our broad foreign law collection. We are now processing a bilingual Amharic-English Ethiopian title, which should be available to all members in April. As part of a collaboration with the Berlin State Library (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin) several years ago, LLMC received 2 large drives of already-digitized historic titles from German principalities, kingdoms, free cities and other pre-unification jurisdictions. LLMC finished adding and cataloging the >4,000 single-volume titles on the first drive. We are now working out processes to have the multi-volume titles extracted and added to our collections. This project is one of the main reasons we have seen so many Germany titles being added to LLMC Digital over the past few years. As always, all titles available in LLMC Digital have been cataloged in OCLC. The MARC records are available from OCLC at no charge to OCLC member libraries and institutions. Authority records for all access points are represented in the Name Authority File hosted by OCLC and the Library of Congress. Additionally, these records are re-distributed to the VIAF (Virtual International Authority File). If you have any questions or suggestions regarding LLMC content, please feel free to email Joseph Hinger, Director of Global Legal Content Initiatives, at josephh@llmc-digital.org.
