About Us
History of LLMC
LLMC was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit cooperative of libraries dedicated to preserving legal and government materials and making them more accessible to researchers worldwide. Initially focused on preservation through microform, LLMC (legally known as the Law Library Microform Consortium) provided libraries with high-quality reproductions of aging and at-risk legal collections, enabling institutions to reclaim shelf space while ensuring long-term access to critical documents.
With the rise of digital technology, LLMC launched the LLMC Digital database in 2003, transitioning its preservation mission into the digital age. This online database service dramatically expanded access to rare and hard-to-find legal titles, including historical statutes, session laws, judicial decisions, administrative regulations, and government reports from jurisdictions around the world.
LLMC’s efforts are guided by a commitment to collaboration and public service. It works in partnership with hundreds of libraries and institutions from around the globe to identify, preserve, and digitize key historic, legal, and governmental records. These efforts not only safeguard cultural and legal heritage but also provide a rich, searchable resource for legal historians, comparative law scholars, and practitioners alike.
Today, LLMC continues to expand its global holdings while upholding the highest standards of digital preservation and bibliographic control. Its work supports equitable access to legal information and contributes to the long-term sustainability of legal scholarship.
