Miege, the Ancient Sea-Laws of Oleron Wisby, 1486
|
|
Gut Miege's essay titled " The Ancient Sea-Laws of Oleron, Wisby, and the Hanse-towns, Still in Force." This was taken out of a French book, "Les Us & Coutumes de la Mer," translated into English, and published in London by J. Redmayne, for T. Basset in 1486. Oléron is an island off the Atlantic coast of France on the southern side of the Pertuis d'Antioche strait. It is the second largest island of Metropolitan France, after Corsica. Hanse-towns refer to a former economic and defensive confederation of free towns in northern Germany and neighboring areas from the mid-1200s to the mid-1600s, with the height of its power in the 1300s. They were also referred to as the Hanseatic League. Visby (Wisby in German) is a former Viking site and a seaport on the Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. It was an important member of the Hanseatic League.
