Croke's Reports During Elizabeth's Reign, 1582-1641, 3v, 4/5ed, Leach, Dublin
Reports of Sir. George Croke, Knight, formerly one of the justices of the courts of King’s Bench and Common Pleas, of such select cases as were
adjudged in the said courts during the reign of Queen Elizabeth (King James) (King Charles); Collected and written in French by himself; Revised and
published in English by Sir Harbottle Grimston; The fifth edition, corrected with marginal notes and references to the later reports and other books of
authority (title and edition notes vary): by Thomas Leach, Vols. 1-3, Dublin, pr. for E. Lynch et al, 1791-93. (Coverage is of cases reported by Justice
Croke {ca. 1560-1642} from the period 1582-1641; i.e., mid-reign Elizabeth I to mid-reign Charles 1. The books scanned and offered here by LLMC
apparently are from a 1791-93 Dublin reprint, authorized or “pirate,” of a slightly earlier London edition of Leach printed in 1790-92. The title page of the
first volume states “Fifth Edition”; while the second and third volumes both state “Fourth Edition.” This discrepancy could arise from erroneous
type-setting in one or more of the Dublin title pages, or from a faithful Dublin reprinting of mixed and possibly accurate information in the slightly
earlier London edition. To add to the confusion, Price & Bitner’s 1953 Supp., p. 428, describes the 1790-92 London Leach edition of Croke’s Reports as
being in 4 volumes, although also with coverage from 1582-1641. However, P. & B.’s reference to “4 vols.” is most likely an error or misprint, since Sir
Harbottle Grimston, the editor of the present edition, states in a footnote at the end of his dedication that the original edition of Croke’s Reports
was also in 3 volumes covering only the reigns of Elizabeth 1, James 1 & Charles 1, as with the present title; albeit in reverse chronological order.
He also informs that an alternate, and in his opinion “more proper” method for citing these reports is as Croke Elizabeth, Croke James, and Croke
Charles.)
