1856, Index to the statutes in force in Lower Canada
|

Index to the Statutes in Force in Lower Canada up to and including those passed in the 1856 session, printed in Toronto by Stewart Derbishire and
George Desbarats, law printers to Her Most Excellent Majesty. The law clerk of the Legislative Assembly, G. W. Wicksteed, was tasked with compiling the
index. In a very readable Preface, he explained why he did what he did and why it was so difficult. At that time, Upper [Toronto] and Lower
[Quebec/Montreal] Canada had only recently [1841] been brought together as a single governmental unit. The capital moved back and forth every four or five
years between those two cities, an impossible situation now. Mr. Wicksteed indexed the Statutes in Force for each unit in its own volume, then indexed
all the statutes that affected both units and put that in each volume. Each volume was published in English and French. This volume began with an
errata sheet. The reader was directed to make the corrections himself before using the index. The Table of Contents was next, and then a table of all
the laws appearing in the index, with a partial citation and the name of the index topic where it would be found. On p.1, the topical index began with
A, running to page 481; each act listed had a citation and usually a year. At p. 483, Supplement 1 had broader topics and names of laws under that
topic without citations. This gave the reader a second chance to search for the desired information. At. p. 497, Supplement 2 listed acts no longer in
force with their original citations. Mr. Wicksteed did not explain the citations: 4 G[eorge] 3 meant the 4th year of the reign of King George III,
c[hapter] 19, s[ection] 2 OR 4 W[illiam] 4 meant the 4th year of King William IV c. 23, s.4, OR 13 V[ictoria] 13th year of the reign of Queen Victoria,
c.4, s.2
