Description and Holding Information
1871-, Manitoba Sessional Papers
Sessional papers of the __ Legislative Assembly of the Province of Manitoba: n.a., 1900-, Winnepeg, var. GovPr, 1900-. (Manitoba was admitted into
the confederation as Canada’s fifth province on 15 July 1870. At that time it had a land area considerably smaller than it would later enjoy. Manitoba’s
creation was by virtue of an act of the Dominion Parliament (Manitoba Act, 34 Vic., c.2) and an Imperial Order-in-Council of 23 June 1870, eff. 15
July 1870, declaring the Manitoba Act in effect. Doubts having arisen as to the validity of certain portions of the Dominion action, the Manitoba Act
was confirmed by Imperial legislation in 1871. A constitution was granted for a provincial government, with a Lieutenant-Governor appointed and paid by
Ottawa, a Primier and ministry on the British system of cabinet tenure, and an elective, unicameral Legislative Assembly, with a normal tenure of five
years absent earlier dissolution. Until 1899 the sessional papers for Manitoba were bound with the legislative journals, which are offered elsewhere
on this site. The LLMC copy of the separate publication, 1900-forward, currently contains the following years: 1900 to 1921 with gaps. The loan or
gift of books to aid in filling those gaps and in extending the run further forward in time would be earnestly appreciated.)
