Virginia Court of Appeals Reports, 1985–, Richmond, State Printer, 1985– (Title is from spines. Vols. 1–19 were issued by the state printer starting in 1985, curiously without title pages. From Vol. 20 on West Publishing Co. took over the series, adding title pages to its volumes. Its copyrighted portion of the still-live title will not be offered by LLMC. This series should not be confused with an earlier series {Virginia Appeals Reports, 35 volumes, 1907–26, all publ.}, which was a preprint of the reports of Virginia's highest court starting with 106 Va. That series served as a sort of advance sheet, making the cases available to the bar in a more timely manner than the official reporter. The present “Supreme Court of Virginia” was then styled the “Supreme Court of Appeals”; hence the title of the earlier series. The modern Court of Appeals of Virginia, an intermediate court of appeals, was established in 1985 with specialized jurisdiction {chiefly administrative, criminal and family law}, and this modern series is the record of its decisions since their inception. A final source of confusion is that both the earlier and the present series share the same citation form: “1 Va. App. 1, etc.” There seems to be no remedy for this problem beyond a vigilant attention to dates.)
