Description and Holding Information
1821-52, Ohio Reports, Official Series
Reports of cases in the Supreme Court of Ohio: by George W. McCook et al, Vol. 1–20, Columbus, Osgood & Blake, 1853, all published. Cite as Oh. or
Ohio. (From 1816 to 1852 the judges of the Supreme Court were required to “ride the circuit”; traveling by horseback for six months a year in order to
hold a term once a year in each county. In the early years this practice resulted in the court acting much of the time as a court of first instance, or
trial court, only occasionally exercising its appellate jurisdiction. In its earlier volumes this title, constituting Ohio’s first set of official
court reports, reports selected cases heard, both on the circuit, and also in special sessions when the court sat as the “Supreme Court in Bank.” Later
volumes omit trial cases and report only the appellate cases. This series ended when the court, re-fashioned by the Second Ohio Constitution, 1852,
discounted the practice of circuit riding. It is followed by the Ohio State Reports, available elsewhere on this site.)
