1861, Commission from Mississippi
|
|
December 1860 letter to Governor John W. Ellis from J. Thompson, Mississippi Commissioner to North Carolina, regarding its upcoming state convention. The letter expressed the hope that both states would work together to defend and safeguard the South following the recent presidential election of Abraham Lincoln. Of note, Thompson criticized the dominant party (Republican) denial that slaves as property were recognized by the Constitution; this "perverted" interpretation would be the "engine" of the South's domestic institutions. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of titles originally held by the University of North Carolina Library at Chapel Hill).
