Commons. Bill to regulate the militia, 1844
December 17, 1844 bill from the North Carolina House of Commons for the better resolution of the Militia in the state. Of note, Section III
allowed the commanding officer to enroll free male person of color as "fatigue men" to clear office parade grounds from encampments. These men, who were
not allowed to use armaments, were subjected to fines if they refused to work for as long as the commanding officer deemed necessary. (Digitized from a
