August 8, 1778 address to Miss Phillis Wheatly, a poetess who came to the colonies from Africa when she was eight years old. The address indicated the poem, based on biblical passages, was written by Jupiter Hammon (1711-ca. 1800), a slave "belonging" to Mr. Joseph Lloyd, and considered to be America's first Negro poet.
