1810, Barnes v. First Parish of Falmouth
1810 Supreme Judicial Court decision in Thomas Barnes versus The Inhabitants of the First Parish of Falmouth. Barnes sought ministerial taxes from
several estates; although he an ordained Universalist and taught members in his voluntary society, a different denomination from that of the
Congregational Society of the parish. After consideration of numerous objections, the Court upheld the lower court's decision in favor of the defendants
because the Universalists were not incorporated as required by law. Of note, taxes was only provided for Protestant teachers, although freedom of religion
was allowed in Massachusetts. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
