House. Comm. on Elections. Report on remonstrance of Phillipston inhabitants, 1831
House No. 18 On June 10, 1831, the Committee on Elections reported it had examined the depositions from the Town of Phillipston and did not think
that the Legislature needed to interfere in the election there. On June 11, 1831, the report was recommitted asking for details. On June 13, 1831, the
Committee reported that on election day in Phillipston the time for voting was usually about 45 minutes, but at the last election, the opening time
was earlier than usual and the time was much shorter than usual. This was not advertised, so several voters were shut out of the process. The
Committee did not think that, mathematically, the number of disenfranchised voters would have made any difference to the outcome and declined to interfere.
