Secretary of the Commonwealth. Abstract of corporations created, 1840
House No. 60 The Secretary of State reported to the House on March 16, 1840 a list of the classes of corporations created since April 1, 1835. The
House had asked for a statement of the property owned by each, but the Secretary explained why he could not give a precise answer. The categories of
incorporated firms were: manufacturing corporations, banks, savings institutions, insurance, railroads, bridges, religious, literary, and charitable,
and miscellaneous. For each, the Secretary provided the date of incorporation, the name of the enterprise, its location, and its authorized capital.
These tables ran to p. 28. Pp. 29-30 showed the number of total corporations in each category and the total amount of property that was authorized,
e.g., banking corporations as a group had been authorized for $57,330,000. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the
Massachusetts State Library).
