Attorney General. Report in the case of the towns of Middleton … 1835
House, (Second session) No. 1 Attorney General's report in the cases of the towns of Middleton, Dorchester, Belchertown, Cambridge, and Danvers
referred to him by order of the House of Representatives in April 1835. On September 2, 1835, the Attorney General submitted his report. This was about
state payments to towns to support paupers. Had the towns received more money than they were entitled? In all cases, yes, but only Cambridge put up a
fight about it. Dorchester paid money back right away. Cambridge claimed the phrase "competent health to labor" was confusing and gave several
other excuses. Money was recovered from a Danvers pauper, who turned out to have a small savings account. The Attorney General sent all the
correspondence he generated in these cases. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
