Adjutant-General. Statement comparing Adjutant General and Quartermaster General's expenses, 1824
|

On January 16, 1824, W. H. Sumner, Adjutant-General of the Massachusetts Militia, sent Nathan Silsbee, President of the Senate of the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts a report about the expenses of The Adjutant General's and Quartermaster's offices. With the separation of Massachusetts and Maine, the
Senate had hoped the expenses of the offices could be reduced. In 1821, the offices had been combined, so there should have been some savings there.
Mr. Sumner sent a 24 page description of his duties and the quartermaster's duties that basically said there was too much work for one man, but
since it was one man, he needed a raise. He also pointed out that it had not yet been three full years since the offices were combined, so that skewed
the figures. There were three pages of tables at the end of the report. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts
