SEE ALSO 56398 Forty-fourth Legislature. House. No. 52. Report of the Committee on Federal Relations on the Gettysburg Soldiers' National Cemetery. The Commissioner for Maine for the cemetery had asked for an additional appropriation for the monument at the cemetery. Mr. Norris appeared before the Committee to give a history of the cemetery and the role of Maine's troops in the battle. He explained where Maine's portion of the grounds was located; there were quite a few unknown soldiers from Maine. The Legislature had originally appropriated $2,500 for the work, but time and inflation meant higher costs, so the Committee asked for $1,800 to finish the monument.
