House. Comm. on Railroads, Ways and Bridges. Memorial, remonstrance and act regarding relocation of the Kennebec and Portland Railroad, 1861
Fortieth Legislature. House. No. 50. The Committee on Railroads, Ways, and Bridges delivered a memorial of the Kennebec and Portland Railroad dated
January 19, 1861. The railroad asked for authority to make a route change. William Fessenden remonstrated that the railroad just wanted to enlarge a
curve in the tracks so it could run its trains faster. There were busy roads crossing the track at that point, so higher speeds were dangerous. The
company was asking for eminent domain to make money, not advance a worthy public good. The route requested would ruin a good piece of property and
one land owner had never been paid for the ground he gave up years ago. An Act additional to an act to incorporate the Kennebec and Portland Railroad,
1861. Permission was granted to move the route, but there were several stipulations. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by
