Thirty-seventh Legislature. House. No. 8 An Act additional to chapter twelve of the Revised Statutes, respecting parishes and religious societies, 1858. Pew-rent money was to be used in the parish where collected as determined by the majority of the parishioners. When someone wanted to sell his pew back to the parish and couldn't agree on a price, there was a mechanism for arbitration. To vote in parish meetings, one had to be a tax payer to the parish. Under agreements, denominations could share buildings. An amendment noted that if a parish were notified of an arbitration figure for a pew sale, the current holder could not longer be assessed pew rent.
